Dipa Karmakar is an artistic gymnast from India. She represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics and got the fourth position in Women’s Vault Gymnastics. Along with PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik, Dipa made every Indian proud in the Olympics.
Dipa Karmakar was born in 1993 with flat feet which is considered as unsuitable for gymnastics. With her hard work, determination, passion and fighting spirit, she overcomes all those challenges. Dipa Karmakar was born on August 9, 1993, in Agarta, Tripura to the middle-class Bengali family. Her father, Dulal Karmakar is a weightlifting coach and mother, Gita is a regular homemaker. She grew up with her sister, Puja Shah and attend the Bengali Medium School. She completed her Bachelor of Arts from Women’s College, Agartala.

Dipa Karmakar : Career
At the tender age of 6, she started practicing gymnastics with Soma Nandi and Bisbeshwar Nandi. She faced many difficulties in her initial days because of her natural flat feet. Through extensive training, she was able to develop an arch in her foot and transformed into a fine gymnast.
In her junior career, she won the Junior Nationals in 2008. She was part of the Indian gymnastics team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi. In the initial phase of her senior career, she won gold medals in all four events in the 2011 National Games in India.
Dipa made her international debut at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She won a bronze medal in the Women’s vault and became first Indian women to win a Commonwealth Games gymnastics medal. In the same year, she finished fourth at the 2014 Asian Games. Following year, she won the bronze in the Asian Championships.
