Arun Shourie is an eminent Indian economists, journalist, author and politician. He is a great statesman of India and never held back to serve the motherland or to come with constructive criticism to the government when it is necessary.
Born in 1941, Arun Shourie has worked as an economist with the World Bank and consultant to the Planning Commission of India. He is a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award and Padma Bhushan. Arun Shourie’s Early Life
Arun Shourie was born on 2nd November 1941 in Jalandar to Hari Dev Shourie and Dayawanti Shourie. He studied at Modern School, Barakhanba and enrolled to St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University to complete a bachelor’s in Economics. He received his doctorate in Economics from Syracuse University. He is married to Anita Shourie, and the couple has a son.

Arun Shourie’s Career
After completing his PhD study, he joined the World Bank as an economist in 1976 and worked for more than a decade. During this period, he also served as a consultant to the Indian Planning Commission. In these times, he began his writing career and often involved in criticizing government’s economic policy.
During the period of Emergency imposed by then prime minister, Indira Gandhi, he began to write in Indian Express to oppose the move made by government. He saw this as an attack on democracy and civil liberties. Later on, he served as executive editor of the newspaper.
Mr. Arun Shourie was nominated as BJP representative for two successive tenures in the Rajya Sabha in 1998-2004 and 2004-2010 from Uttar Pradesh. He held the office of the Minister of Disinvestment, Communication and Information Technology under Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s prime ministership and led the sale of Maruti, VSNL and Hindustan Zinc.
As a writer, he penned many books on a diverse range of subjects such as political, economic, governance and social issues. Worshiping False Gods, Falling Over Backwards and A Secular Agenda are some of the books written by him which are received positively.

In his journalism career, he exposed corruptions and several major scandals and often dubbed as “India’s Watergate”. He started a one-man movement against Abdul Rehman Antulay, chief minister of Maharashtra State in 1981. He was bold enough to stand up for the better good of the people. He firmly objected to The Muslim Women Act 1986 and worked extensively against it.
Arun Shourie was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1982 and the Padma Bhushan in 1990 for his excellence in journalism. He is further conferred with many awards and accolades such as Dadabhai Naoroji Award, Astor Award, International Editor of the Year Award and The Freedom to Publish Award.
