Ashutosh Gowariker is an Indian filmmaker who took modern Indian Cinema to the new height. He showed courage to take the path less traveled by, and establish himself as one of the India’s eminent director. Besides direction, he is equally prominent in acting and writing.

Born on February 15, 1964, he directed hit movies such as ‘Lagaan’, ‘Swades’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’. He enjoys great commercial and critical success. He has made movies so deeply Indian that it connects emotionally with the viewers. There is something special in his direction and movies, which made him different than his fellow directors such as Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and Rajkumar Hirani.

Gowariker was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra to Ashok Gowariker and Kishori Gowariker. He grew up with his sister Ashlesha Gowariker. After completing schooling from Kolhapur, he shifted to Mumbai. Where, he enrolled in the Mithibai College to pursue degree in chemistry.

The talented director is 5 feet 11 inches tall with a physique of 90 kg. He is Auqarius by horoscope and Hindu religion. Beside direction, he loves to watch reality shows and classic movies.

Gowariker is married to Sunita Gowariker and they have two sons – Konark and Vishwang.

Ashutosh Gowariker : Career

Gowariker started his career with the 1984 film ‘Holi’ in a supporting role. After that, he worked in movies such as ‘Naam’, ‘Chamatkar’ and ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’. Meanwhile, he worked in several television series like ‘Circus’ and ‘C.I.D.’.

Gowariker made his directorial debut with ‘Phela Nasha’ in 1993 featuring Pooja Bhatt and Raveena Tandon. The movie performed badly at the box office.  His next venture was ‘Baazi’ featuring Aamir Khan and Paresh Rawal. The movie was a commercial and critical hit.

Gowariker proved his directorial genius with the period epic film ‘Lagaan’  starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh. The movie was about the cricket match between British officers and Indian villagers in the late 18th century. The movie was a box office success and establish Gowariker as a premier director in India.

Next, he came up with Shah Rukh Khan – Gayatri Joshi starer ‘Swades’. Although, the movie received positive response from film critics, it performed low in the box office. His next project ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ with Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai further establish him in the film industry.

Further, he came up with movies such as ‘What’s Your Raashee?’, ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’ and ‘Mohenjo Daro’. In later days, he was unable to repeat his earlier success.

Gowariker was at the peak of his career during the early 21st century. During this time, he gave wonderful movies such as ‘Lagaan’, ‘Swades’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’. In 200, he won the National Film Award for ‘Lagaan’. For the same movie, he won Filmfare Award, IIFA Award and Zee Cine Award for best director for the year. Further, he repeated the same feat with ‘Jodhaa Akbar’.
