Harivansh Rai Bachchan Rai is one of the most commended Indian poets of the 20th century. He was born on November 27, 1907, in Allahabad, India, previously when India was a part of the British colony. He is also the father of the famous Bollywood actor Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and he has also another son Ajitabh Bachchan.

Harivansh was married twice in his lifetime; his first wife is Shyama Bachchan, who fell the victim to Tuberculosis and later was married to Teji Bachchan in the year 1941 with whom he had two sons.

Harivansh died at the age of 95 on 18th January 2003 in Mumbai Maharashtra India. He lived a very successful life and through his works, he has been able to win hearts of million of his fans.

Harivansh’s Career

Harivansh Rai Bachchan started his career in the year 1941 as a lecturer for the Allahabad University where he taught English. After that, he spent the next two years on St Catharine’s Collage, based in Cambridge. During his time in Cambridge, he also did his doctoral thesis on W.B Yeats in the Cambridge University.  He is also the second Indian to complete his Ph.D. from the Cambridge University. After completion of his Ph.D., he returned India and served for All India Radio. However, later in the year 1955, he shifted to Delhi and joined the External Affairs Ministry as an officer. He served in the Ministry for almost ten years.

Apart from his career as a teacher and as an officer, Harivansha is mostly known for his contribution to the Indian literature society as a poet. “Madhushala“, one of his famous poem, helped him get more exposure in the literature society and was also liked by many of his fans.

Apart from “Madhushala”, some of his famous works are “Agnipath”, “Ruke Na Tu”, “Poorv Chalne Ke Batohi”, “Kya Karu Samvedna Lekar Tumhari”, “Himmat Karne Waalon Ki Haar Nahi Hoti”, “Vishwa Sara So Raha Hai”, “Andheri Raat Mein Deepak Jalaye Kaun Baitha Hai”, “Teer Par Kaise Ruku” and so on. Some of his works are also used in various movies like “Silsila”, “Agneepath”, “Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara”, “Alaap” and so on. With his works in the Indian Literature, he has been able to attain one of the nation’s best award “Padma Bhusan” back in the year 1976.
