Chungneijang Mery Kom Hmangte, known as Mary Kom is an Indian boxer. She won an Olympic bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She made India proud with her glorious achievements and earned nickname “Magnificent Mary”. Mary Kom : Early Life and Personal Details

Mary Kom was born on 1st March, 1983 in Kangthei, Manipur, India. Her parents Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom were simple farmers. She was the eldest of four siblings. She grew up in a humble background helping her parents with farm related activities.

Mary went to Loktak Christian model High School, where she studied up to class VI and shifted to St. Xavier Catholic school. However, she quit studies before completing schooling to pursue career in boxing.

The Magnificent Mary is 5 feet 2 inches tall with short black hair and brown eyes. Besides boxing, her hobbies are martial arts, music and football. After dating for four years, she tied the knot with Karung Onkholer Kom in 2005. At present, she is the mother of three sons.

Mary Kom : Career

Mary started to pursue boxing by seeing Dingko Singh winning a Gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games. At first, her parents are not sure about Mary’s playing boxing. They felt that boxing was too masculine for a young girl. But, later on, they supported Mery throughout her career.

She started her training under M. Narjit Singh at Manipur State Boxing. With her sheer determination and hard work, she developed into a fine athlete. In her initial career, she won a Best Boxer Award at the Women’s Boxing Championships. She introduced herself to the boxing circle with a bang.

Mary continued her journey by winning five National Championships between 2000 and 2005. In the same period, she won AIBA World Boxing Championship thrice. She won a silver medal at the 2008 Asian Women’s Boxing Championship held in India. In the following year, she returned with a gold medal from the Asian Indoor Games.

In 2010, Mary won a gold medal at the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships. At the 2010 Asian Games, she competed in the 51 kg category. This time she stood third. Like earlier event, she won a gold medal at the 2012 Asian Women’s Boxing championship.

The milestone of her boxing career was the 2012 London Olympics. Despite coming from conflict torn state of Manipur and marginalized tribal community, she won a bronze medal in the Olympics. She made every Indian proud and happy.

After London Olympics, she won the gold medal in the flyweight category at the 2014 Asian games.
