Mobashar Jawed Akbar popularly known for M. J. Akbar is one of the leading Indian journalist, politician, and writer, who started his career as a trainee and worked as a sub-editor for “The Illustrated Weekly of India”.

Born on 11th January 1951, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, he was a Congress MP from Kishanganj in Bihar during 1989-91 and is chairman of the fortnightly newsmagazine.

Mobashar Jawed Akbar’s Early Life

Mobashar was born in a Bihari family in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal. He joined Calcutta Boy’s School and passed out his degree in English from Presidency College, Calcutta.

He is married to Mallika Joseph and has two sibling children. Both of his children is well educated: whereas Prayaag is an alumnus of Dartmouth College and Mukulika is a law graduate of Jesus College, Cambridge.

After completing his graduation in 1970, he joined “The Indian Times” in 1971 as a trainee and later worked as a journalist and editor in The Illustrated Weekly of India. He was an editor of “the Sunday guardian” and launched India’s first modern newspaper “The Telegraph”.

In 1991, he served as Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s official spokesman and started working as an advisor to the Minister of Human Resources. The following year, he quit politics and return back to journalism and got huge success in that field. Again he joined Bharatiya Janata Party as a spokesperson in 2014 and was also elected to Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand in 2015.

Besides his career in Politics and Journalism, he has written different books including a biography of Jawaharlal Nehru named “Nehru: The Making of India”. Also, he worked on “Kashmir Behind the Vale”, “Riot After Riot”, “Blood Brother-A Family Saga” and “India: The Siege Within”.

His book “Tinderbox: The Past and future of Pakistan” representing them of identity crisis and class struggles in Pakistan was popular among the readers. Moreover, he is also associated with different medias including India Today, The Telegraph, The Asian Age, Headlines Today and Deccan Chronicle and some others.
