Sakshi Malik is an Indian freestyle wrestler, who won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. By doing so, she became the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. Along with PV Sindhu and Dipa Karmakar, she made every Indian proud in the Olympics.

Sakshi Malik was born on September 3, 1992 in the Mokhra village of Rohtak district in Haryana to Sukhbir Malik and Sudesh Malik. She grew up in Rohtak with his brother. She went to Vaish Public School and DAV Centenary Public School for early education. Sakshi completed her graduation from Maharshi Dayanand University.

This young wrestler is 5 feet 3.5 tall with a weight of 64 kg approx. About ethnicity, she is Jat and Hindu by religion. Sakshi developed an early interest towards wrestling by seeing her grandfather in a wrestling arena. At the age of 12, she joined Ishwar Dahiya’s akhara at the Chotu Ram stadium. She started honing her skills by training with boys as there were very few girls. Besides that, she had to face protests from locals who are against the training of girls.

Sakshi started to develop quickly at the junior level and even claimed a bronze medal at the 2010 Junior World Championships. She came into limelight, when she won a Gold at the Dave Schultz International Wrestling Tournament in 2014.

She continued her impressive journey with another silver at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. This victory is her personal favorite and hold a special place in her heart. In a following year, she participated in the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships held in Doha. She added another bronze in her trophy haul.

The match between Sakshi Malik and Aisuluu Tynybekova for the bronze medal in the 58kg category was epic. At one stage, she was trailing by 0-5 and very close to defeat.
